The Golf Course Builders Association of America (GCBAA) Foundation, the charitable arm of GCBAA, is committed to providing college students and youth with the tools and opportunities to explore the game and potential careers in the golf industry. The foundation has developed the following mission:
To develop and expand its "Sticks for Kids" program of providing clubs, bags and support for under-privileged children to learn the game of golf. The program is a very positive experience for the children as it teaches them life values pertaining to safety, etiquette, and rules of golf as well as how to play the game. The children receive instruction from qualified educators, most of which are PGA professionals. A partnership agreement was signed with the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) in 2006 to market SFK to its 6000 member municipalities. With this program in place, SFK has grown to almost 300 programs and is training tens of thousands of children each year as well as providing golf clubs and bags for them to use. The Foundation board plans to add a minimum of 100 new programs per year.
A scholarship program for college students who are interested in pursuing a career in the golf industry. Scholarships are awarded by working with colleges in selecting students in their junior or senior year who are interested in participating in golf related programs. GCBAA members or others can match donations in the form of a matching scholarship. Scholarships are now being offered at over 20 universities with approximately 40 scholarships available to students.
Support for benevolent programs that enhance the golf industry. The Foundation board is committed to promoting the accomplishments of Sticks for Kids chapters, scholarship and grant success stories, and other positive community-oriented endeavors of the GCBAA and our membership. This can be achieved by using the Foundation's resources and status to develop case histories, position papers, and press releases. As an example of this, the GCBAA Foundation provided support for the publication of the 2008 Environmental Approach to Golf Course Development book, which was published in conjunction with the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA).
